Acupuncture can be expensive, especially if a patient requires regular treatment over a period of time to really get better. To make acupuncture as accessible as possible, Diane runs 'affordable clinics' in Kentish Town Health Centre.
These are multi-bed clinics. There are three beds in a large room. Each patient is allocated 20 minutes to discuss their treatment and for the needles to be inserted. Acupuncture needles usually take 20 minutes to do their work, so while one patient relaxes into their treatment, the next patient can be seen.
Each patient has an initial one-to-one consultation where any symptoms and medical history are discussed. The first treatment is also in private. Follow-up treatments in the affordable clinic cost £25.
Every effort is taken to ensure patient modesty and privacy. Screens are sometimes used and relaxing music is played to enhance the therapeutic atmosphere.
Research shows that patients report many positive experiences and few negative experiences in multi-bed clinics. Patients particularly like the community feel these clinics create (Stone 2006).
