Kiiko Matsumoto Style (KMS) Acupuncture

KMS acupuncture is a truly holistic style of treatment. It focuses on the entire body and is adjusted to meet your individual needs. A unique strength of this style is its ability to easily identify any underlying structural and/or constitutional imbalances which may be preventing your current symptoms from healing fully. This is mainly achieved through the use of a sophisticated system of palpation, where tenderness at specific points on your body helps identify the root of your problem. Testing treatment points to see if these tender areas reduce ensures that you get the most appropriate treatment which helps us to resolve your issue with you.

Possibly the greatest strength of KMS acupuncture is the ability to pull all the strands of a person’s health together into a cohesive whole. Kiiko’s ability to integrate current understandings of physiology and pathology with ancient Chinese knowledge of how the body works together as a unified whole is what she is most revered for. Her ability to translate this knowledge into powerful and effective clinical strategies is her genius.

Focusing on the underlying causes of a disorder not only results in relief from symptoms but it often leads to effective, long-lasting clinical results leaving the patient in better health and with a better understanding of why symptoms occurred and what they can do to manage their own health better in future.

It is this holistic approach which makes this style of acupuncture a suitable option for a wide range of conditions – even the most complex ones.

What would a consultation look like?

In-depth assessment of your health

We will start with a detailed discussion of your medical history and the precise nature of your condition and any symptoms you may have. Questions concerning your digestion, sleep, energy levels and other factors will help us understand your general state of health better.

It’s important that we know of any previous health incidents you’ve experienced, as these may be preventing healing. These might go as far back as your birth or even your family history.

Your current life situation must also be considered. For example, stress, a damp cold flat, poor posture or diet can often be key contributors to poor health.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is multi-levelled and focuses on treating the root cause with emphasis on the entire body rather than a single symptom.

A unique feature of KMS acupuncture is its use of a highly systemised method of palpation. Palpation is the ability to gain information through touch.  Immediate feedback from active reflexes on the patient’s body help reveal the root of a condition. These also suggest the most appropriate treatment strategies to help resolve it.

The effectiveness of treatment and future prognosis can be measured by how well these active reflexes change. Both the practitioner and the patient can feel this. The speed and extent of these changes is often quite surprising to new patients and can be empowering as it demonstrates that change and healing is possible.

Treatment

Accurate differential diagnosis is the foundation of a correct and effective treatment plan. The goal is always to help you reach and enjoy optimal health. This may mean resolving your current problem, or, in more difficult and chronic cases, helping you manage your condition better, giving you the physical and mental resources to build resilience and strength, so you can enjoy life to the fullest.

KMS acupuncture uses very fine sterile needles, inserted very shallowly, with minimal stimulation. This gentle needling style promotes relaxation and results in virtually pain-free treatment.

A flexible and creative approach is taken in each treatment. We are all unique, one size certainly does not fit all. A wide variety of treatment methods are available to meet the needs of each individual. These might include the use of moxibustion, diode rings, magnets and other techniques if needed.

Post-treatment

Depending on your lifestyle and needs, we may provide dietary advice, specific exercises or relaxation techniques as ‘homework’ to help re-inforce and maintain the treatment you receive in clinic. We may also supply take-home press tacks or ear seeds as part of your take-home plan. It’s important that we support you to make the necessary changes outside of your acupuncture treatment, to give you the best chance of achieving good health and optimal well-being.
