Acupuncture is a sophisticated and powerful system of healthcare which has been practised in China and the Far East for over 2000 years. It helps restore, promote and maintain good health. It is a safe and effective treatment which is becoming increasingly popular in the West as people find that it can offer a drug-free solution to many of our modern ailments.
The therapeutic effects of acupuncture can be understood in both Western biomedical terms and through the Chinese energetic model of how the body works together as a unified whole. Both have been outlined below.
Acupuncture is used to treat people with a wide range of illnesses. Its focus is on improving the overall well-being of a patient, as well as treating any specific symptoms. The aim of treatment is to bring the body back to balance (homeostasis) and thereby promote optimal health.
According to Chinese Medicine, our health is dependent on the body’s motivating energy known as Qi (pronounced ‘chee’), moving in a smooth and balanced way through a series of channels which connect to our internal organs. This ensures that the body is properly nourished and is able to function well. The channels can be compared to blood vessels in how they supply oxygen to every cell in our body.
The aim of acupuncture treatment is to promote good health by regulating the flow and quality of Qi. If our Qi is strong, we are able to ward off illness and enjoy good health and vitality.
Pain, illness or disease result from a blockage or imbalance in the flow of Qi. Many factors can disrupt the flow of Qi including stress, trauma, structural misalignment, lifestyle or diet. An imbalance in the cycle of Qi can lead to ill health, low spirits, or the inability to heal after an injury. We may also experience fatigue and feelings of frustration with the world around us.
By inserting fine needles into specific points on the body, acupuncture helps restore healthy circulation and thereby promote optimal health. The restoration of the smooth flow of Qi produces a vibrancy and vitality that can be felt both physically and mentally.
In the West, acupuncture is increasingly gaining recognition as clinical trials are proving its effectiveness for a wide range of conditions. It is officially recognised by the NHS as a safe treatment when performed by a qualified practitioner. A British Medical Association survey (2002) reported that 79% of GPs would like to have access to acupuncture treatment for their patients.
Acupuncture is a drug-free treatment which has minimal side-effects. Since it works to regulate all of our systems, most people report an improvement in energy levels, digestion, sleep and general well-being as a result of treatment.
